Hohe Tauern National Park
Holidays in Hohe Tauern National Park
The biggest nature sanctuary in the Alps ...
Wild, ancient landscapes and a rich cultural tradition of hill-farming - these are the two faces of Hohe Tauern National Park, spanning an area of some 1,834 km², this national park is the biggest nature sanctuary in the entire Alps. The incredible natural diversity of this sanctuary makes Hohe Tauern National Park truly special. Ancient alpine landscapes such as glaciers, rugged crags, ravines and lush meadows, along with alpine pastures that have been tended for centuries, create a natural work of art beyond compare - one which merits as much protection as possible. Hohe Tauern National Park, which was established in 1981, was Austria's first national park. Over the years, this nature preserve, which is shared between Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, has developed into the largest by area in all of the Alps. The sea of 3,000-meter peaks offers an incomparable "skyline". The Hohe Tauern are often referred to as "The Rooftop of Austria". Not without just cause - aside from Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner at 3,798 m, more than 300 other peaks tower upwards beyond the 3,000-meter mark.
